Telfair Academy

The South's oldest public art museum, in an 1818 Regency mansion

Address 121 Barnard St, Savannah, GA 31401

The Telfair Academy is the oldest public art museum in the American South, founded in 1886 in the former Telfair family mansion — another William Jay Regency building from 1818. The collection focuses on American and European art from the 18th to 20th centuries, with particular strength in American Impressionism and works connected to the Georgia region.

The building is worth visiting as architecture as much as for the collection: Jay's characteristic spatial sequences and ornamental detail are well-preserved. The Telfair Museums group also operates the Owens-Thomas House nearby and the Jepson Center for the Arts across Telfair Square — a combined ticket covers all three.
