El Huerto, which means "the orchard", is one of Sucre's classic Bolivian restaurants. The dining room and a generous garden patio sit on Calle Ladislao Cabrera, a fifteen-minute walk east of the centre. The kitchen serves regional Chuquisaca specialities: picante de pollo (chicken in a fiery red chilli sauce), sajta de lengua (beef tongue stewed in yellow chilli), chorizo chuquisaqueño, and the local sausage charque kan made with dried llama meat.
Live folkloric music — guitars, charangos, panpipes — plays on weekend evenings. The garden is the place to sit in good weather, under fig trees with hummingbirds working the flowerbeds. Two-course lunches around 60 bolivianos, dinner mains 80–120. A favourite of locals as much as visitors and worth the short walk.
