La Taverne is run by the Alliance Française from a colonial townhouse on Calle Aniceto Arce. The kitchen does a respectable approximation of French bistro food — duck confit, beef bourguignon, crepes — alongside a few Bolivian dishes given a French finish. The wine list draws on the better Tarija producers (Aranjuez, Kohlberg) and there is a decent French selection by the glass.
Lunch is the best time to come, when the courtyard catches the midday light and the Alliance hangs French film posters along the walls. The set lunch is good value at around 50 bolivianos; mains à la carte run 70–100 bolivianos, modest by international standards but a little above local. Closed Sundays. Reservations advisable on weekend evenings.
