Arena Amazônia

World Cup stadium with a fibreglass-mesh facade

The Arena Amazônia is the most controversial building in modern Manaus — a 44,000-seat stadium built at vast expense for four World Cup games, with no clear use afterwards. As architecture it is striking from the air: a perfectly circular cushion of latticework that glows from within when lit at night. As a piece of urbanism it remains underused.

Guided tours run on most days and take in the pitch, players' tunnel, dressing rooms, and a small gallery of memorabilia. The structure is best appreciated by walking around the outside; the cantilevered roof drains rainwater into a system that supplies the building's bathrooms.

A story
Designed by the German architects GMP for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Arena's outer skin is a basketwork of white steel and fibreglass meant to evoke an indigenous palm-fibre basket. After hosting four matches it has struggled to find regular tenants in a city without a top-division football club.
