Museu Seringal Vila Paraíso

Reconstructed rubber estate accessible only by boat

Vila Paraíso is a reconstructed seringal — a rubber-tappers' estate of the kind that operated in the upper Rio Negro from the 1880s to the 1920s. The site reproduces a barracão (the owner's house and store), a defumador for smoking latex, tappers' huts, and the trails through the forest where workers cut and bled the seringueira trees.

The estate is reached only by boat: tours leave from the Marina David in central Manaus, take about 30 minutes by speedboat to the south bank of the Rio Negro, and include a guided walk explaining the brutal economics that built the city across the water. A half-day excursion well worth doing.

A story
The rubber estate at Vila Paraíso was built in 2002 as a film set for the Brazilian movie "A Selva", an adaptation of Ferreira de Castro's 1930 novel. After filming the state of Amazonas turned it into an open-air museum dedicated to the seringueiros, the tappers whose forced labour fed the wealth of Belle Époque Manaus.
