Beit Yaacov Synagogue

Historic synagogue of the Manaus Jewish community

A short walk from the Teatro Amazonas, the Beit Yaacov / Rabi Meyr synagogue is one of the more surprising buildings in central Manaus — a small Sephardic congregation in a tropical city, the visible remnant of a Moroccan-Jewish migration that few outside the region know about. The current building, with its modest plaster facade, replaced an earlier wooden synagogue on the same plot.

Visits are by arrangement; ask at the door or contact the community in advance. The Israelita Cemitério Beit Hayim in the Cachoeirinha district, with graves going back to the 1880s, is another remnant of the same history.

A story
Manaus's Jewish community was founded in the 1810s by Sephardic merchants from Morocco who came up the Amazon during the rubber boom — at one point Belém and Manaus together had several thousand Jewish residents. The Beit Yaacov / Rabi Meyr synagogue, founded in 1928, still serves the small but historically continuous Sephardic community.
