Legation Quarter

The Legation Quarter is the former diplomatic district near Tiananmen Square, where foreign missions were clustered in the late Qing period. During the Boxer Rebellion, diplomats and Chinese Christians sheltered here through a 55-day siege. Many of the old embassy buildings remain, giving the area an unusual pocket of late-19th-century European architecture in central Beijing.
