Originally built in 1959 as one of the Ten Great Buildings marking the tenth anniversary of the People's Republic, the Workers' Stadium — Gongti to locals — was demolished and rebuilt to its original outline as a dedicated football ground, reopening in 2023 as the home of Beijing Guoan. On match days the area floods with green-shirted supporters and the noise carries across Sanlitun.
For most visitors the draw is the surrounding nightlife rather than the stadium itself: the streets around Gongti hold the densest concentration of bars and clubs in the city, and "Gongti" is shorthand among young Beijingers for a night out. The stadium and its forecourt are the orienting landmark of the whole Sanlitun district.
