Wanping Fortress

Wanping Fortress is a Ming-era walled town beside Lugou Bridge, southwest of central Beijing. It is closely tied to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of 1937, and shell marks from the Japanese attack are still visible in places.

The fortress is most worthwhile when combined with Lugou Bridge and the nearby war-history sights. It takes more effort than Beijing's central monuments, but the history here is concrete rather than abstract.
