Bayi Square

Bayi Square (八一广场) is the civic heart of Nanchang — a vast ceremonial plaza anchored by the August 1st Monument, with fountains, benches, and the provincial government buildings on its flanks. The square is genuinely grand by any measure: it was one of the largest public squares in China when it was expanded, and the combination of the tall obelisk, the fluttering PLA flag, and the wide open space gives it a formal gravity that distinguishes it from the commercial plazas of most Chinese cities.

In the evenings, the square transforms into a gathering place for ordinary residents — families strolling, children on scooters, retired couples doing fan dances or t'ai chi. The formal monument and the relaxed local life coexist without obvious tension. The square is surrounded by shops, hotels, and restaurants on all sides, making it the easiest navigation point in the city center.

A story
The towering monument at the center of Bayi Square was completed in 1977, during the late Cultural Revolution period. It stands 45.5 meters tall — combining the date 8.1 (August 1st) with the year 1927 in its dimensions, according to the official account. The flag raised daily here is reputedly larger than Tiananmen's. On the morning of August 1st, PLA units perform a formal ceremony that draws enormous crowds.
