Nanchang Old City Wall Remnants

Nanchang's ancient city walls, originally built during the Tang dynasty and substantially rebuilt in the Ming, were largely demolished during the twentieth century. Small sections survive in the Donghu district, integrated into the surrounding urban fabric in ways that require some searching to find. The most accessible surviving section is preserved as a heritage site near the old north gate area, where a stretch of Ming-dynasty brickwork remains standing.

The surviving sections give some sense of the scale of the original fortification — the walls encircled a city of considerable size and defended it through numerous military campaigns, including the siege during the Taiping Rebellion in the 1850s. A walk around the walls' original footprint is described on plaques in Chinese.
