Crystal Gallery

In the Durbar Hall of Fateh Prakash Palace (part of the City Palace complex), the Crystal Gallery holds what is said to be the world's single largest private collection of crystal — chairs, tables, fountains, dinner services, a sofa, even a crystal bed — all ordered from the English firm F. & C. Osler in the 1870s and never used.

The collection is extraordinary precisely because of its absurdity — opulent enough to feel slightly oppressive, beautifully presented in a stately hall with its own painted ceiling. Tickets are separate from the main palace and noticeably more expensive; whether it is worth the cost is a matter of taste.

A story
The order from F. & C. Osler of Birmingham was placed by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1877 — including a crystal bed — but the maharana died before any of it arrived in Udaipur. The crates sat unopened in the palace storerooms for 110 years, finally inventoried and put on display in 1994.
