The "elephant gate" once led the maharana's processions out of the old city to the north; today Hathipole is the name of the busy shopping district that runs along the road outside it. Saris, jewellery, silver, mojari shoes, and tailored kurta-pyjamas can all be bought here for less than half what you would pay in the tourist lanes of Lal Ghat.
The neighbourhood is also home to Natraj Dining Hall (the city's most beloved thali restaurant) and is where most of Udaipur's middle class actually shops. Loud, busy, and fun.
