Built in 1893 by the local Chinese community with funds from the Qing emperor, this is the only Confucius shrine in the world directly administered by China. The vivid red, gold, and yellow buildings are pure southern Chinese ceremonial architecture — completely unlike anything else in Japan. Inside the main hall stand 72 life-size statues of Confucius's disciples, carved in Beijing and shipped over. Behind the shrine is a small but high-quality Chinese Historical Museum with rotating loans from the Palace Museum in Beijing and the National Museum of China.
