Megane Bridge

The Spectacles Bridge over the Nakashima River was built in 1634 by Mokusu Nyojo, a Chinese monk from Kofuku-ji, and is the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan. The name comes from the two arches and their twin reflections in the water, which together form a pair of glasses. The bridge was almost lost in a 1982 flood — it was carefully rebuilt with the original stones afterwards. The river walkway alongside is a pleasant ten-minute stroll that takes in several other stone bridges of the same era; small heart-shaped stones embedded in the wall on the south bank are a hunt for couples.
