A small specialist aquarium 20 minutes east of the city centre dedicated almost entirely to penguins — nine species in total, more than any other facility in the world. The colony of king penguins is the largest in Japan, and you can watch the keepers walk smaller penguins around the grounds on land. Worth the trip if you have children, or if you want a contrast from the dense memorial geography of central Nagasaki. The aquarium sits on a small beach where, weather permitting, the penguins paddle in the open sea behind a low net.
