Kofuku-ji

The oldest of Nagasaki's Chinese temples, founded in 1624 by the Nanjing community. The plain wooden main hall is in pure Chinese style with sweeping eaves and a distinctive Buddhist altar. Kofuku-ji is historically the most important — it was here in 1654 that the Chinese monk Yinyuan introduced the Obaku school of Zen to Japan, which went on to flourish at the great Manpuku-ji temple in Uji. The temple grounds are quieter than Sofuku-ji and feel more like a working monastery than a tourist site.
