Oranda-zaka — literally "Holland Slope" — is a stone-paved hill street that climbs from the harbour through what was the foreign settlement after Nagasaki opened to international trade in 1858. The Japanese called all the foreigners "Hollanders" out of habit, hence the name. A handful of original Western-style houses survive along the lane, some restored as small museums. Atlas Obscura mischievously lists this as one of Japan's "three most disappointing sights" — and the view at the top is indeed less than spectacular — but the stone street itself and the houses are worth the climb on the way to Glover Garden.
