About 800 metres southeast of the hypocentre, this small Shinto shrine has the most evocative single object in Nagasaki — half of a stone torii gate, still standing. The blast wave struck the torii from the side; one of the two stone pillars was knocked over, the other was left intact. The shrine kept it that way and the lopsided arch is the most photographed atomic relic in the city. The two giant camphor trees in the shrine grounds were burned to charcoal by the blast but lived; their gnarled trunks are part of the same memorial.
