The Chinese were confined to a walled compound here from 1689 to 1859 in the same way the Dutch were confined to Dejima — only this compound housed many more people. At its peak some 2,000 Chinese merchants and labourers lived behind the four-metre walls. Almost nothing of the original quarter survives apart from four small temples in the inner streets: Tochijido, Tenkodo, Kannondo, and Fukutokuji. The compact garden enclosing them gives a sense of the layout. A quieter, less polished site than Dejima — and easy to combine with a walk through Shinchi Chinatown next door.
