Tandem Paragliding from Sarangkot

One of the world's classic tandem-paragliding flights — Sarangkot launch, Lakeside landing

Pokhara is one of the three or four best tandem paragliding sites on the planet. The Sarangkot launch sits 1,000 metres above the lake, the thermals are reliable from late morning through afternoon, the landing zone is a flat field next to Lakeside, and the Annapurna range fills the view the whole way down.

A 20- to 30-minute tandem flight costs around 8,000 NPR (about US$60); longer cross-country flights are also available for experienced clients. Operators are clustered at the south end of Lakeside; book a day ahead and ask for the morning slot for the best views before the cloud builds. Pilots are mostly European with thousands of hours; flights run October through April, weather permitting.

A story
The first paragliding flight off Sarangkot was in the 1990s when a French pilot tried it on a whim; within a decade Pokhara had been declared one of the top paragliding sites in the world for its combination of reliable thermals, mountain backdrop, and easy launch and landing zones. The annual cross-country competition now draws pilots from across the globe.
