Tal Barahi Temple

Island shrine in the middle of Phewa Lake — the most-visited Hindu temple in Pokhara

A small two-tiered pagoda on a tiny wooded islet in Phewa Lake, dedicated to the Hindu boar-headed mother goddess Barahi. It is the most-visited religious site in Pokhara, and the classic photo opportunity: the temple, the lake, and the Annapurnas reflected in the water on a calm morning.

To reach the temple, hire a brightly painted doonga rowboat at any of the jetties along Lakeside — about 500 NPR for the round trip, or you can row yourself for the same price minus a tip. Saturday is busy with Nepali pilgrims and worth a visit just to see the boats criss-crossing the lake; quieter visits early on weekday mornings. Take off your shoes before climbing the steps to the shrine.

A story
The two-tiered pagoda on the islet is dedicated to Barahi, the boar-headed protectress of the lake. Saturday is the traditional day for offerings, when the lake fills with painted doonga rowboats ferrying families across to make sacrifices of incense, sweets and (occasionally) chickens to the goddess.
