Rawal Lake is a small artificial reservoir on the eastern edge of Islamabad, built in the 1960s by damming the Kurang River. It supplies drinking water to the capital and to Rawalpindi, and the surrounding watershed is a protected forest reserve. The lakeside park is a popular weekend picnic spot.
Pedal boats and rowing boats can be hired at the boat club on the south shore. The lake holds a healthy population of fish — anglers (with the appropriate permit) come for the rohu and mahaseer. The 13-km circumference makes a good cycling loop in the cool months.
