Al Wakra Old Souq

Al Wakra, about 15 km south of central Doha, has a restored old souq that gives a quieter and less tourist-managed version of what Souq Waqif offers in the capital. The coral-and-gypsum houses around the restored waterfront square and covered market date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and have been more gently handled than Doha's reconstruction.

The harbour at Al Wakra still has traditional dhows and a small fishing community. The adjacent Souq Al Wakra hotel is set in the old buildings and has a rooftop with good views. The beach at Al Wakra is one of the better public beaches near Doha. Easily combined with a trip to Al Wakra's small archaeological collection.

A story
Al Wakra was once a significant pearling and fishing port, second in Qatar only to Doha. After oil ended the pearling economy in the 1940s, the old fishing families gradually moved away and the coral-block houses fell into disrepair. The restored souq now gives a clearer picture of what pre-oil Qatari coastal architecture actually looked like than anything in Doha itself.
