A small Japanese garden with a faithful reconstruction of the Japanese house that once stood here for a senior colonial-era civil servant. The garden uses the classic shakkei (borrowed-landscape) technique, with stepping stones, a koi pond, lanterns and clipped pines arranged in a tight courtyard.
Inside the house, tatami rooms, sliding paper doors and a tokonoma alcove give a sense of how the small Japanese elite of Kaohsiung lived between the wars. The volunteers occasionally hold tea-ceremony demonstrations. Free to enter, closed Mondays. A 10-minute walk from Hamasen MRT.
