Dome of Light

Largest stained-glass artwork in the world, in a metro station

The central atrium of Formosa Boulevard metro station holds the largest single piece of glass public art in the world — a 30-metre-wide dome made of 4,500 stained-glass panels, painted with vast figures of creation, destruction, love and renewal. It is genuinely worth descending to the station just to see it. Best at the on-the-hour light shows when music plays and the panels glow in sequence.

Free to visit; you do not need a metro ticket to reach the dome, only to pass through the gates. Use the station's central exit. The two main MRT lines (Red and Orange) cross here, which is why the dome is set in such a prominent space.

A story
The Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata spent four years on the piece, working with assistants in Germany to fabricate the 4,500 glass panels that make up the dome. The four themes — Water, Earth, Light and Fire — together tell a story of birth, growth, prosperity and destruction, then rebirth.
