Fongshan Old City

Taiwan's first stone fortress, with surviving Qing-era gates and walls

The remains of an early Qing-dynasty walled town at the edge of Lotus Pond, a short walk from the dragon-and-tiger pagodas. Three of the original four gates still stand: the East Gate (Fongyi Gate) is the most complete, with its tunnel passage and a section of curtain wall. The North Gate is built into a modern apartment block. The South Gate has been partly reconstructed.

A small information centre by the East Gate explains the unusual story of the old city, which was abandoned for political reasons in the 18th century. Easy to combine with a Lotus Pond visit — the gates lie within a 20-minute walk of the dragon pagodas.

A story
The walled city was built in 1722, replaced by a wooden wall around modern Fongshan in 1788, and rebuilt in stone in 1826 after rebels overran the second one. The current gates are the 1826 set — the only Qing-era stone city walls still standing on Taiwan.
