Coral-limestone hill rising over the city, with monkeys and panoramic views

The 356-metre limestone hill that rises directly behind the city centre, also known as Monkey Mountain for its troops of Formosan rock macaques. Several walking trails climb the wooded slopes: the most popular leaves from the Yuanheng Temple at the southern foot and reaches the Stone Forest and a series of viewpoints over the harbour and the city.

Macaques are everywhere on the trails. Keep food out of sight — bags will be snatched if you do not — and do not make eye contact with the dominant males. A circuit of the main paths takes 2-3 hours. Best at dusk or early morning for the cooler temperatures.
