Pier-2 Art Center

Cluster of converted warehouses now full of galleries, studios and street art

A long line of former dock warehouses converted into galleries, performance spaces, indie shops and cafes along the inner harbour. Pier-2 has become the cultural heart of new Kaohsiung — a place to spend half a day wandering between exhibitions of contemporary Taiwanese art, oversized public sculptures on the harbourside lawn, and craft markets at weekends.

The whole strip is free to walk around; individual exhibitions usually charge a small fee. The light-rail Star line runs through the middle so you can hop on at one end and hop off again at the other. Best at sunset, when the warehouse fronts glow red and the harbour ferries cross the bay towards Cijin Island.

A story
The warehouses were abandoned in the 1990s when the port shifted further south. A group of local artists began to use them as studios from 2001, and the city government formally redeveloped them as an arts centre in 2006. The Star line of the light rail now runs straight through the middle, sharing space with the public art.
