Confucius Temple, Kaohsiung

Taiwan's largest Confucius temple, set on the northern shore of Lotus Pond

The largest Confucius temple in Taiwan, built in the early 1970s in a faithful copy of the layout used at the original Confucius temple in Qufu, China. The grand red-and-yellow buildings sit on the northern shore of Lotus Pond, with a wide pavement courtyard and ceremonial gates.

The temple is busy only on Teacher's Day (28 September), when ceremonial dances and offerings are held to mark Confucius's birthday. The rest of the year it is quiet, and walking through the empty colonnades gives a sense of the formal Chinese imperial style that few other places in Taiwan offer.
