A surreal landscape of grey, eroded clay hills about 45 km north of central Kaohsiung. The land is mudstone that erodes easily with each rainstorm, so vegetation cannot get a foothold — the result is a maze of bare ridges and gullies that looks more like a moonscape than a Taiwanese hillside.
A short boardwalk loop (about 1 km) takes you to the most photogenic viewpoints. Best visited at sunset or after rain. The site is tricky to reach without a car; rental scooters from central Kaohsiung are the easiest option, or take a bus to Tianliao town and a taxi from there.
