Theater in der Josefstadt

The Theater in der Josefstadt is the oldest continuously operating theatre in Vienna, opened in 1776 and rebuilt in elegant Biedermeier style in the early 19th century. Beethoven conducted the music for its reopening in 1822, and the auditorium still has the intimate, old-city feel that makes it very different from Vienna's grander state theatres.

Most performances are in German, so check the programme before booking. Even if you do not see a play, the theatre is worth noticing while walking through Josefstadt, one of Vienna's quieter central districts.
