Kestnergesellschaft

One of Germany's oldest art societies, showing major contemporary exhibitions

A private contemporary-art society founded in 1916, now housed in a former public bath whose glass roof and tiled walls survived the war. The Kestnergesellschaft (named for the Hanoverian polymath Georg Kestner) gave many of Germany's now-canonical modernists their first solo shows — Kandinsky, Picasso, Klee — and continues to show ambitious contemporary work.

Exhibitions change every three to four months. The cafe at the back of the building, with light from the original frosted-glass dome, is a good place to read.
