A modest brick-Gothic church a block north of the Marktplatz, finished in the late 13th century and tucked between newer buildings. The big draw is the late-medieval altar attributed to Lucas Cranach the Elder's workshop in the Duve Chapel, one of the few major works of art in Hanover to survive the war intact.
The church gives a sense of how the medieval city felt at street level — narrow, vertical, brick — before the open spaces of the 1950s reconstruction took over.
