Marktkirche

14th-century brick-Gothic church at the heart of the Old Town

The Marktkirche, dedicated to St. George and St. Jacob, is the largest of the city's brick-Gothic churches and the centrepiece of the reconstructed Old Town. It was finished in the mid 14th century, comprehensively destroyed by bombing in 1943, and rebuilt in the 1950s in a deliberately simplified form.

Inside, the late-Gothic altar with its painted wings is the artistic highlight — the surrounding glass is by the post-war master Charles Crodel. The tower can be climbed in summer for a view over the Marktplatz.

A story
The four corner-spires that originally crowned the 97-metre tower were never finished — the city ran out of money in the 1360s. The flat top has been a Hanover landmark ever since.
