The Neues Rathaus, finished in 1913, is a Wilhelmine pile of granite and sandstone with a 98-metre dome that dominates the city skyline. Inside the entrance hall, four scale models show the city at four points in its history — including a sobering one of October 1945, after the Allied bombing. The real attraction is the dome lift: a unique curved elevator that climbs at an angle, following the inside of the dome to a viewing platform with a panorama over the city, the Maschsee lake and (on a clear day) the Harz mountains to the south.
