Aggitis Canyon follows the river country inland from Kavala, where northern Greece starts to feel more Balkan and mountainous than Aegean. The gorge is valued for its limestone walls, clear water, and access to the wider Aggitis cave-and-river landscape.
It is best treated as part of a day inland rather than a standalone city sight. Combine it with the Cave of Alistrati or the archaeological site of Philippi if you have a car. In summer, the canyon makes a welcome break from the heat on the coast; in wet weather, check local conditions before attempting trails near the river.
