The castle ruins at Petropigi are the remains of a fortified station on the Via Egnatia, with late Byzantine origins and later Ottoman use as a caravanserai. The site is a small stop rather than a major monument, but it adds a useful historic layer to a trip through the Nestos area.
It works best for travellers already exploring the region's older road routes, ruins, and landscape around Kavala and the Nestos Delta.
