Fortress Halkero is a ruined hilltop fortification near Kavala. The remains are rough and largely unrestored, but the site has the appeal of a quiet lost place, especially for visitors interested in defensive landscapes and abandoned military history.
The climb is part of the visit. Go for the views as much as for the ruins, and wear shoes suitable for uneven ground.
