Archaeological Museum of Kavala

Regional finds from Neapolis, Philippi, and Amphipolis

The city's main archaeological museum holds finds from the wider Kavala region spanning prehistory to the Byzantine period, with the strongest material from the ancient cities of Neapolis (the Greek precursor to Kavala), Philippi, and Amphipolis. Sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, and coins are well displayed. Closed Mondays.

The Neapolis finds are particularly interesting because they fill in the history of the site before Kavala existed: Neapolis was a Thasian colony founded in the 7th century BC, later an ally of Athens and a staging point on the Via Egnatia. The Philippi material ranges from the city's founding in the 4th century BC through its Roman period, when it was an important colony and the setting of the first Christian church in Europe. The museum's coin collection is especially strong — Kavala sits on a historically rich coastline and the ground has yielded a wide range of monetary evidence across periods.
