Agios Nikolas Church stands close to Kavala's old harbour, in one of the town's most pleasant pockets for wandering. The church is best known for the mosaic on Kontouriotou Street showing the Apostle Paul landing in Kavala, a reminder of the city's place in early Christian history.
The surrounding streets are part of the appeal. The neighbourhood is a little worn in places, but in summer evenings its cafes, ouzo bars, small restaurants, and shops make it one of the livelier corners near the waterfront.
