Leopold Bloom stops at this "moral pub" on Duke Street for a glass of Burgundy and a gorgonzola sandwich in the Lestrygonians episode of Ulysses — making it one of the most visited literary pubs in the world. Joyce himself was a regular, and the original owner Davy Byrne appears briefly in the novel.
The pub has been extensively renovated since Joyce's time and feels more polished than gritty, but the Joycean connection is taken seriously: murals by Irish artist Cecil ffrench Salkeld depicting scenes from Ulysses hang on the walls. On Bloomsday, the pub serves gorgonzola sandwiches and Burgundy wine in faithful recreation of Bloom's lunch. Worth a stop on any literary tour of the city centre.
