Moore Street Market

Dublin's oldest open-air street market, just off O'Connell Street

Moore Street, a narrow lane running off Henry Street behind the GPO, is home to the city's oldest food market, where traders have hawked fruit, vegetables, and flowers from barrows for generations. The cries of the stallholders -- 'five for a euro' -- are a vanishing soundtrack of old working-class Dublin, and the street's terraces also sheltered the leaders of the 1916 Rising during their final retreat.

In recent decades the market has been joined by a lively array of African, Asian, and eastern European grocers and butchers, making it one of the most multicultural corners of the city. It is a quick, atmospheric detour from the polished shopfronts of O'Connell and Henry Streets.
