Housed in a beautifully restored Georgian townhouse, the James Joyce Centre is the essential stop for anyone tracing Joyce's Dublin. The museum explores Joyce's life and the city that shaped his writing, with exhibits on Ulysses, Dubliners, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Pride of place goes to the original door of 7 Eccles Street — the fictional home of Leopold Bloom — salvaged before the building was demolished.
The centre runs regular walking tours of Joyce's Dublin, retracing the routes of characters from Ulysses through the streets of the north inner city. The house itself, on one of Dublin's finest Georgian streets, was once owned by dancing master Denis J. Maginni, who appears as a character in Ulysses.
