Basilica of San Domenico

Massive brick Dominican church with relics of St Catherine

The vast plain brick basilica of the Dominicans, on a ridge west of the centre, with one of the best views back across the city to the Duomo. The interior is austere — a single barn-like nave — but holds Andrea Vanni's 14th-century portrait of Catherine of Siena, made during her lifetime and the only contemporary image of the saint.

The Chapel of Saint Catherine has frescoes by Sodoma showing her ecstasies. A glass reliquary holds her preserved head. She was canonised in 1461.

A story
A side chapel here holds the head and right thumb of St Catherine of Siena, returned to the city after her death in Rome in 1380. The Sienese asked the pope for the whole body and were refused; legend has it that a friar smuggled the head back in a bag and, when guards asked to see inside, the head appeared as rose petals — a story Sienese guides still tell with relish.
