Piazza del Campo

Siena's shell-shaped medieval square, home of the Palio

The great shell-shaped square at the heart of Siena, sloping gently down to the Palazzo Pubblico. It is divided into nine sections by lines of travertine stone, representing the Council of Nine who governed Siena in the 13th and 14th centuries. Twice a year it is covered with earth and serves as the track for the Palio horse race. At all other times it is an outdoor living room for the city.
