The Eagle contrada, immediately south of the Duomo, is one of the smaller of the 17 districts but holds some of the most prestigious territory in the city. The contrada church of Sant'Agata and the museum sit just down the slope from the Duomo, with the painted Habsburg eagle emblem visible on the corner of the building.
The contrada was granted its eagle emblem and the right to use "Imperial" in its title by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V on his visit to Siena in 1536 — a status Aquila members still quietly emphasise.
