Sanctuary of Saint Catherine

Birthplace of St Catherine, turned into a small cloistered shrine

The house where Catherine Benincasa was born in 1347, the 23rd or 24th child of a Sienese dyer, transformed into a small complex of chapels and oratories after her canonisation. The most striking space is the Oratory of the Crucifix, built around the painted crucifix from which Catherine reportedly received her stigmata in 1375.

The street outside is steeply stepped, called Vicolo del Tiratoio, and the visit can easily be combined with the Basilica of San Domenico just uphill.
