Each of Siena's 17 contrade (neighbourhoods) keeps a small museum — usually attached to its parish church — that holds Palio banners won over the centuries, costumes, photographs, and contrada relics. They are not open at fixed hours; visits must usually be arranged in advance with the contrada office, sometimes through a guide.
A handful — Oca, Selva, Tartuca — accept regular tours by booking. The museums collectively form one of the most unusual cultural networks in any European city: a working memory of inter-neighbourhood rivalry that goes back six hundred years.
