Palazzo Salimbeni

Gothic palace, headquarters of the world's oldest bank

Three palaces — Salimbeni, Tantucci, and Spannocchi — joined around a small square at the head of Banchi di Sopra, all serving as the headquarters of Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472. The 14th-century Palazzo Salimbeni at the centre, with its Gothic three-light windows, is the most architecturally interesting.

A statue of the Sienese economist Sallustio Bandini stands in the middle of the piazza. The square is occasionally open for art exhibitions; otherwise it is best appreciated from outside.

A story
Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472, is the oldest continuously operating bank in the world. Its name comes from the pastures (paschi) of the Maremma whose revenues backed its early loans. The bank has been intertwined with the city's life ever since, funding the Palio, restoring churches, and — in the 21st century — coming spectacularly close to collapse.
